Beneath Paris’s bustling streets lies the Catacombs of Paris, a somber underground ossuary holding bones and skulls of over six million individuals, moved there in the late 1700s to relieve overcrowded cemeteries. Visitors descend approximately 20 meters below ground into dimly lit tunnels where skeletal remains are neatly arranged into artistic patterns—rows of femurs, skulls, and monuments built from bone structures. Originally abandoned limestone quarries transformed into the Paris Municipal Ossuary in 1786, the site was organized in the early 19th century by Inspector Héricart de Thury into decorative chapels and galleries, complete with memorial plaques and poetic inscriptions intended to evoke reflection on mortality.
